The Concept

In the desert areas of southern Morocco, the vegetation struggles to keep its place in the face of a desert that is constantly expanding. In the Tissint district in general, and Douar Bani Moussi in particular, most households depend on agriculture as their main source of income. It is therefore of fundamental importance to help these populations to recreate sustainable agricultural projects in these fragile oases. This is where the “Green Day” project comes in.

Action Plan:
Under the United Nations Environmental Programme’s “Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign”, we provide the participants of the STUDENTS CHALLENGE with a sustainable development project, “Green Day”:
* Planting young date palms
* Ensuring the necessary irrigation by:
    - creating a 100 cubic meter water catchment basin
    - providing a solar pump

- During “Green Day” the participants of the STUDENTS CHALLENGE, under the direction of the local project leader, will dig holes and plant the young trees. They will then water them for the first time, giving them a head start for survival.

- The organiser of the STUDENTS CHALLENGE is in charge of the project and is contributing to its financing.
- AZEKKA FRANCE-MAROC Association, is managing and coordinating the project.

- A local project leader is in charge of the preparation, organising the planting of the young trees, and organising regular watering, as well as making regular reports which will appear on the
STUDENTS CHALLENGE Website over the following months.
Personnel will be paid by the project to water the young trees several times a month for the first year, in order to give them the best possible chance for their roots to grow down to reach ground water. At that point the young date palms will be able to live in complete autonomy.

Each participant may purchase ECO POINTS (1 ECO POINT includes 1 date palm, irrigation and the collecting basin/solar pump project - 1 ECO POINT = 6 Euros). (An order form is provided.)

During the day, a "Green Cup" prize is awarded to the college or university with the highest number of ECO-POINTS.

In 2009, Students Challenge participants planted 1000 date palms and installed a 100 cubic metre water-collecting basin and solar pump in the Moroccan village of Bani Moussi.

For the 3rd edition of the Students Challenge, the project will be renewed in another village. We will keep you informed of the details very soon.

Don’t hesitate to encourage everyone at your school to buy as many Eco-Points as possible.

The order form will be available for download shortly.

What is an ECO-POINT?

1 ECO-POINT = 6 euros

TOTAL for the project: 2042 Eco-points - The project includes the trees, the water catchment basin and the solar pump for irrigating the trees:
176 Eco-points will permit us to finish planting the oasis started during the 1st edition (774 trees planted)
833 Eco-points will permit us to build the water catchment basin
1033 Eco-points will provide the solar pump
